Binhi

Project about saving Earth

This Planting Project is about saving the earth by planting trees to stop natural calamities. The problem of this project are my recipients, which are the people of Marikina, are prone to flooding yearly.  This is because the area is a valley and a catch basin for all the water coming from higher places, such as San Mateo, Montalban and Antipolo.  Because of the deforestation in these areas and the garbage accumulated in the Marikina river, the river overflows, everytime there is a typhoon.  Part of the issue is also climate change, which results to more intense climate conditions and heavier rainfall, again resulting to flooding in the area.  This the project has three parts: fund raising through an online platform, tree planting activity and social media awareness of the activity.  We expect that the project will not only support the activity that we will do, but also encourage others to start their own tree planting activities, big or small to help save the environment

What's Binhi?

-  The title of my Teens Can Project is “Binhi” or seed because it is about planting trees. It is also inspired by the saying that every project will start small before it will grow bigger.  The project is all about asking for the community’s financial help to plant more trees, using an online platform. In exchange, the tree will be named after the donor.

-   The project involves making a website and collecting funds, finding a site for tree planting and organizing a tree planting activity.  The main goal of my project is to help save nature one tree at a time, since we are experiencing a lot of natural disasters, due to climate change. The purpose of my project is to plant more trees to help decrease the bad effects of climate change, make the air in the environment cleaner and prevent flooding.

-   The thing that motivated me to do this project was my old Grade 1 Kids Can Project which was called “PLANT-A-TREE CHALLENGE”.  Now that I am bigger, I want to make the project bigger and wider in reach.  I also live in Marikina, which is prone to flooding.  That is why, this project is very personal to me.  As mentioned above, the project has three parts: fund raising through an online platform, tree planting activity and social media awareness of the activity.  I expect that the project will not only support the activity that I will do, but also encourage others to start their own tree planting activities, big or small.

Solution

-   The solution I am most interested in investing in nature-based solutions, plus an awareness campaign. In particular, Planting Trees and Vegetation is the solution that I want to particularly pursue. We have learned over time that extra trees and vegetation can absorb excess water into the soil and can prevent land erosion by slowing down heavy water flow.  It is a long term solution, but I think it is the most effective approach.

-   This solution is the main motivation behind my Teen’s Can Project as well.  In my project, I will build a website first, to promote and encourage people to buy/sponsor a seed. Upon building the website, I will promote the program via social media and through family and friends.  Then, I will purchase the seeds and organize a tree planting activity.  Those sponsored seeds will be planted in an area within Marikina City, in partnership with the local government.

-   The activity will not resolve the overall flooding problem in the area, but I hope it will become an inspiration and a good start-up for people to become more aware of the benefits of planting trees, prevention of soil erosion, etc.
